Phil Kliewer and Ed Smith were two long-time colleagues who became friends with a shared passion for building and treating people the right way.

After many years of working for large corporate companies, Phil and Ed had managed over 5 billion dollars in construction projects.

Neither leader planned to start a construction firm, but both recognized a need for a highly relationship-driven, people-first, Central Valley-focused general contracting company that could offer a large construction firm’s value at the smaller overall cost of a local firm.

What would it look like to take the best of the construction industry and bring it to the next level? What if the “next generation” of construction was marked by innovative use of technology and unmatched respect for human beings?

In 2020, Nexgeneral Construction was born.

Phil and Ed were joined by Gabe Escalera, and together, the three leaders embarked on a five year journey of growth, learning, and transformation.

Thanks to the company’s incredible team, clients, and partners, Nexgeneral has expanded our construction portfolio, grown our team, built beautiful buildings, and developed meaningful connections.

Relationships are always important to us.

-Ed Smith

Whether building villas from the ground up, remodeling office spaces, restaurants, and medical buildings, refinishing cabins in Yosemite, or upgrading exhibits at the local zoo, every project has helped the Nexgeneral team deepen relationships with one another and the community.

Each project has also challenged Nexgeneral to think differently, explore new ideas and find better ways to bring visions to life.

“I want to see us build things that make people happy and fulfill their dreams”

-Gabe Escalera

On behalf of the entire Nexgeneral team, thank you to every client, partner, and supporter who has joined us on this journey.

We look forward to the future with excitement and expectation!

With gratitude,

Nexgeneral Construction Team
