What does a general contractor do? At Nexgeneral Construction, we guide clients through every phase of a project, from planning and design to construction and final move-in.

A general contractor is responsible for managing every aspect of a construction project. This includes planning, coordinating subcontractors, securing permits, overseeing construction, and ensuring the project stays on schedule and within budget.

When people ask what a general contractor does, the answer is simple: they take your vision and handle the entire process from start to finish.

Here’s a look at the process we follow when working with clients:

What Does a General Contractor Do During a Project?

  1. Define Your Goals

The first step is understanding your vision. What do you want this space to achieve? Maybe you’re modernizing, improving workflow, adding private offices, or upgrading finishes. During this stage, we also create a realistic budget and timeline so everyone is aligned from the start.

  1. Assess the Space

Next, we take a walk through your current office if we are doing a remodel. We will make a list of what works and what doesn’t and what changes you would like to see. Considering everything from lighting, layout, acoustics, and storage.

This is also when we review local requirements, permits, zoning, ADA compliance, and even the historical status of your space if needed.

  1. Build Your Team

Once your goals are clear, it’s time to assemble the team that will bring your project to life. You’ll need a licensed general contractor experienced in commercial tenant improvements, an architect or designer for layout and finishes, and possibly an engineer for larger structural or mechanical upgrades.

A general contractor like Nexgeneral plays a key role in managing every phase of a project, from the first idea to move-in day, ensuring the process stays smooth and stress-free. Clear communication among the client, architect, and subcontractors is a big part of what we do.

  1. Develop the Design

Together, we will work with your architect or designer to create detailed drawings and review layout, finishes, and furniture options. Once finalized, the plans are submitted for city approval if permits are required.

  1. Construction Phase

Now comes the exciting part, seeing your ideas turn into something real. Once permits are secured, our crew gets to work. We manage the demolition, construction, and inspections, keeping everything organized and on track.

Throughout the process, you’ll get regular updates and walk-throughs to see how everything is coming together. Our goal is to keep things on schedule, on budget, and moving forward smoothly. This stage is a core part of what a general contractor does, turning plans into reality while managing timelines and subcontractors

  1. Final Touches & Move-In

When construction is finished, it’s time for the finishing touches. Furniture, technology, and signage are installed, and a final inspection ensures everything meets requirements.

Once that’s complete, you get to move in and enjoy your new space!

Our goal is to make the entire process as easy and simple as possible, keeping you informed and confident every step of the way. Every client and project matters to us.

If you’ve been wondering what a general contractor does, it ultimately comes down to managing your project from concept to completion.

My favorite part of being a general contractor is watching someone’s dream come to life. It’s why I get up every morning.”
